Experience

www.GrancheTutoring.com I specialize in online tutoring. No travel fees when meeting online! I began tutoring algebra in my high school honors program and continued to tutor throughout my undergraduate years at Penn State University. I taught calculus while pursuing an advanced degree in Computational Mathematics. Currently I am a private tutor working with high school and college students in person and online. I share the my passions for math, science and writing while accommodating each student’s individual learning styles. My methods are encapsulated in Teaching Philosophy: As a tutor, I break down barriers to careers and higher learning. No student should be stopped from becoming a scientist or engineer just because they got stuck on factoring trinomials or implicit differentiation. No one should be barred from pursuing a higher degree just because of lackluster writing instruction. My students have the potential, and I am there to help them succeed. Many students are intimidated by the very idea of math or science. By making the tutoring session a friendly, stress-free environment, I help to remove those mental barriers. I focus on positive reinforcement; I never let the student feel stupid for not understanding a concept. I teach my students that, as long as they are willing to put the work into it, they can learn even the most challenging material. Generally, writing students suffer a lack of focus or proper instruction rather than subject-specific anxiety. I concentrate my feedback on essay structure and content. Word processing applications can help a great deal with spelling and grammar, but they can’t teach a student how to write a well-organized, cohesive essay. I teach organizational methods such as outlining and topic sentences. I never tell my students what to write; I ask questions to draw out their own knowledge and ideas. My feedback is nonjudgmental and focused on how the essay fits the assignment.
